Cycling Participation Strategy

Mother and son

The Milton Cycling Participation Strategy (CPS) provides a common framework and sets direction to guide the development of cycling for recreation and sport in Milton. It complements other Town initiatives such as the Trails and Cycling Master Plan Update and the "Move More, Milton!" Physical Activity Plan. The Strategy draws on the knowledge and expertise of a wide range of stakeholders and community groups. Key areas are addressed such as leadership, accessibility, coaching, volunteer development, communication, sport programming and event hosting.

The intention of the Milton Cycling Participation Strategy is to be a sustainable, community-supported grass roots initiative that unifies the different cycling disciplines in a common vision. The key stakeholders, including Ontario Cycling Association, Halton District School Board, Milton Cycling Academy, Conservation Halton and Milton BMX, will make their best efforts to achieve the recommendations in the strategy in their delivery of cycling programs and services in Milton. The Cycling Participation Strategy focuses on the vision of Milton becoming the Home of Canadian Cycling.

Highlights of the goals set out in the strategy include:

  • Developing a "Cycle Milton" website as a one-stop resource for all types of cycling information including area cycling maps and opportunities for participation in local cycling events.
  • The "Let's Ride!" cycling program will be used by CPS partners as the basis of fundamental cycling skills development.
  • The new "Right to Ride" cycling program for schools has been developed in conjunction with the Halton District School Board and is being implemented during the 2015/16 school year.
  • Coach, officials and volunteer training and development will take place in conjunction with the Ontario Cycling Association.
